Abstract :This study discusses Caryl Churchill`s play Cloud Nine in terms of Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity through the lens of feminist criticism. It focuses on how the play challenges traditional gender norms and exposes the performative nature of identity. Judith Butler argues that gender is not fixed at birth, but rather something that comes into being through repeated actions and behaviors, meaning that it is essentially performative. When the play is examined through this theory, it reveals that gender is not a natural or fixed attribute but a performative and socially constructed identity. In Act I, Betty is played by a male actor, which symbolizes that her identity is shaped by male expectations. Similarly, Edward, her son, is played by a woman to reflect his femininity and emphasize his struggle with masculinity and nonconforming gender behavior. These casting choices support Butler’s claim that gender identity is not natural but is produced through repeated performance. The role reversal in the Act II express their liberation from these patriarchal oppression. In this respect, this study explores how Cloud Nine challenges the traditional gender norms and illustrates the instability of identity. This study also aims to contribute to the studies in this field by analyzing gender roles from a feminist perspective through Caryl Churchill`s play. The study is based on a qualitative literature review in academic databases with the keywords feminist theater and gender performativity.
