Abstract :Media literacy refers to critically analyzing media content and being competent in producing messages for print, audio, video, and other media (Hobbs, 1998; Potter, 2004). According to the latest report published by the Sofia Open Society Institute (2022), Turkey ranked 31st out of 41 countries and was one of the lowest in media literacy which shows that the public is vulnerable to false news and disinformation. The concept of media literacy is new in Turkey, so it is a new concept for the Turkish education system. The United States also does not have a long history of media literacy (Kubey, 2003). Therefore, this study aims to analyze media literacy in higher education in Turkey and the U.S. from a comparative perspective. A comparison of higher education media literacy courses between these two countries would serve as a guide on how departments could integrate media literacy content into their curricula. The research method is the literature review. According to the results, media literacy in higher education in both countries receive less attention compared to K-12 schools.
Keywords : media literacy, higher education, comparative education
