GENDER ISSUES IN LEADERSHIP STYLE OF PRINCIPALS

Abstract :The question of how issues of gender affect the way school principals’ leadership style is perceived by teachers has attracted little attention. In order to measure the leadership style of school principals we used the Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(MLQ);. This paper aims to determine if there exist gender differences in the leadership behavior of school principals. This paper also investigates how the interaction between principal and teacher gender affects teachers’ evaluations of the principal’s leadership. Findings revealed that female principals were more transformational than male principals were and engaged in more of the contingent reward behaviors insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(active-constructive leaders);. Male principals were more likely to manifest the other aspects of transactional leadership insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(passive-avoidant leadership and management by exception-passive);. The implications of these findings are encouraging for female school leadership in Turkey.
