Abstract :SUMMARY In this paper, methods of computer aided composition throughout the histodeill growth of computer musie as well as the new directions in this field are surveyed. Fol/owing an examination of the concept of `algorUhmie composition`, main approaches to computer aided composition are classified and examplified. Brief explanations of methods collaboreted by varjous topics such as artifidal intelligence, fractals, iterated funet/ons, neural networks, Markov chains, eel/u/ar automata and genetic a/gorithms are given, outlining notable examp/es ofpast and current research in this field.
