Abstract :PANETH CELLS AND MUCOSAL IMMUNITY ABSTRACT Paneth cells constitute small intestine crypts together with columnar, goblet and enteroendocrine cells. Count of them in the crypts gradually increases towards distal regions, with being most excessively in the terminal ileum. More recent hypothesis is that antibiotic peptides are released form intestinal epithelial cells and these peptides are one of the components of mucosal immunity. In mammalian small intestine, paneth cells secrete alpha defensin and additional antimicrobial peptide-containing granules into the lumen between crypts. Alpha defensins are in the same class with nonoxidative microbial cell killer peptides in the phagocytic leukocytes and these effects were also shown in in vitro studies. Injury of crypt and induction of paneth cell insufficiency are compensated with accumulation of cells from crypt centers and release of antimicrobial substances from paneth cells. KEY WORDS: Paneth Cell, Mucosal Immunity, Alpha Defencin PANETH HÜCRELERİ VE MUKOZAL İMMÜNİTE ÖZET Paneth hücreleri kolumnar, goblet ve enteroendokrin hücreleriyle birlikte ince barsak kriptalarını oluştururlar. Bu kriptalardaki sayıları ince barsakların distal bölgesine doğru gittikçe artmakta ve en çok terminal ileumda bulunmaktadırlar. Son zamanlarda ortaya çıkan hipotez barsak epitelyal hücrelerinden antibiyotik peptitlerin salınması ve bu peptitlerin de mukozal immünitenin komponentlerinden biri olduğudur. Memeli ince barsaklarında paneth hücreleri, kriptler arasındaki lümene alfa defensin ve ek antimikrobiyal peptit içeren granüller salgılarlar. Alfa defensinler fagositik lökositlerdeki oksidatif olmayan mikrobiyal hücre öldürücü peptitlere eşdeğerdir ve bu etkileri invitro araştırmalarda da gösterilmiştir. Kriptin zarar görmesi veya paneth hücre yetersizliğinin indüklenmesi kript ortalarındaki hücrelerin ortama toplanması ve paneth hücrelerindeki antimikrobiyal maddelerin salınmasıyla kompanze edilmeye çalışılır ANAHTAR KELİMELER:Paneth hücresi, Mukozal İmmünite, Alfa Defensin
