Abstract :Excavations at the prehistoric site of Karavelyan are being conducted with the framework of the Ilısu Dam Reservoir Salvage Project. The site, located in the province of Diyarbakır within the upper Tigris Basin, has revealed occupational levels of the Early Halaf period, mainly consisting of paint-decorated pottery. Among he decorated vessels, sherds depicting a multi-storey building is of special interest. Previously, Halaf culture had been particularized with round-plan structures that are considered to have domed roofing like in the so-called beehive structures of the present day Harran and Suruç Plains. A few years ago a Halaf vessel depicting a multi-storey building, seemingly of wood and reeds at Domuztepe excavations in the Maraş Province, had for the first time indicated the presence of such buildings; however, this was taken as a unique case. The recovery of the picture of an identically similar building at Karavelyan, hundreds of kilometres away from Domuztepe, clearly indicated that such multi storey wooden constructions were rather widespread in the Halaf culture. Keywords : null, null null, null null null
