Abstract :In this brief essay, I take up a theme that occurs repeatedly in Robert Braidwood\\\'s writings. This is the relative roles played by the natural environment, and human needs and abilities, in the origins of agriculture. Some fifty years after the inception of the Iraq-Jarmo Project, because of new insights and information, these factors continue to be debated. Just when it seems that the problem has been settled, new information shakes us from our complacency.
