Abstract :In recent years, climate changes due to global warming have led to a deterioration in the hydrological balance worldwide, and sudden and irregular rainfall has increased the frequency and severity of flood disasters. In countries with topographical diversity and different climatic zones such as Turkey, this situation poses serious risks to settlements and agricultural lands. In order to manage floods effectively, it is of great importance to identify potential flood areas and model the risk levels of these areas. Today, numerical modeling techniques, geographic information systems and hydraulic simulation software are widely used for this purpose. In this study, a 1-dimensional (1D) hydrodynamic flood model was created for Doğantepe Stream located in Geyve district of Sakarya province. Firstly, the flood flows corresponding to 2-500 year recurrence periods of the region were calculated using Log-Pearson Type III distribution. Then, a digital terrain model (DEM) was created in ArcGIS environment and maps of flood spreading areas, water depth and velocity distribution along the stream were produced with the help of HEC-RAS software. Stream bed geometry and roughness coefficient were determined by Cowan method and model parameters were supported by satellite images and on-site observations. According to the results of the analysis, as the flow increases, the flood propagation area expands and agricultural lands and residential areas, especially along the left bank, are under significant risk. The developed model can be used as a decision support tool for the section between Doğantepe settlement and Karaçay confluence point and provides guiding data for regional planning and disaster management.
