Relationship Between Obesogenic Family Environment, Children’s Smartphone Usage, and Depressive Symptoms

Abstract :Objective: Childhood obesity has become a most common public health problem. We aimed to examine the relationship between obesogenic family practices for childhood obesity, children’s obesity, and depressive symptoms. Material and Methods: In the present study, we conducted on 96 families and their children aged 7-15 who applied to our pediatric clinic from October 2021 to July 2021. Parents and children who agreed to participate in the study filled out an online questionnaire containing sociodemographic data, children\`s weight, and height information, \`The Children\`s Depression Inventory insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(CDI);,\` and \`Family Nutrition and Physical Activity Screening Tool insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(FNPA);,.\` Results: The present study found that the higher risky family practices for childhood obesity were associated with increased children\`s depressive symptoms insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(r=-0.279, p=0.006);. Obesogenic family environment was correlated with higher depressive scores in the children. It was also confirmed that the children with obesogenic family environments spent more time on smartphones insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(p<0.001);. Conclusion: The FNPA is an easily applicable tool to determine obesogenic family factors. We might be careful about depressive symptoms and smartphone use in children with obesogenic family environments.
