Abstract :The introduction of euro will have important implications for the international monetary system. The size of the euro area, the stability of its policy framework and the integration of financial markets imply that euro will turn out to be a major world currency. This paper aims to present an overview of the roles of an international currency and to discuss the roles of euro as an unit of account, medium of exchange and as a store of value.
