An Assessment of Early Literacy Adequacy in Preschool Classrooms

Abstract :This research aims to assess the adequacy of preschool education classrooms in terms of early literacy. The study sample consisted of 102 preschool teachers working in different cities. Data were collected via a personal information form and the Early Literacy Environment Assessment Scale of Preschool Classes to assess classroom environments regarding early literacy. The findings suggest that most classrooms provided moderate support, but some required further improvement. Factors such as teachers\\\' professional experience, educational background, and the type of school they worked in did not significantly affect the adequacy of classroom environments in fostering early literacy. However, a significant difference was found concerning the age group taught. Classrooms for the 48–60 and 60–72-month-old groups offered a more supportive early literacy environment than those for the 36–48-month-old group. Based on these findings, it is recommended that teachers be supported with in-service training, financial resources be provided to schools, and nationwide classroom standards for early literacy be established.
