PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE, RELATIONSHIP AUTHENTICITY AND THE MEANING OF MARRIAGE IN ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS

Abstract :The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between psychological violence in romantic relationships, relationship authenticity and the meaning of marriage. The sample of the study consists of 509 women over the age of 18. In the data collection process, the Women\'s Psychological Abuse Inventory was used for the psychological violence variable; the Authenticity in Relationship Scale was used for the relationship authenticity variable; the Meaning of Marriage Scale was used for the meaning attributed to marriage variable; and the Personal Information Form was used for the demographic variables to be examined. SPSS 21.0 program was used for data analysis. According to the findings of the study, psychological violence is negatively related to the relationship authenticity (r=.36, p<.05), positively related to the negative meaning of marriage (r=.15, p<.05) and negatively related to the positive meaning of marriage (r=.19, p<.05). In addition, the relationship authenticity is positively related to the positive meaning of marriage (r=.12, p<.05), and negatively related to the negative meaning of marriage (r=.38, p<.05). Findings showed that psychological violence significantly predicted the relationship authencitiy (10.2%), the positive meaning of marriage (3.4%), and the negative meaning of marriage (1.5%). In addition, the variables were examined according to age, relationship status, education level and relationship duration. The research findings were evaluated in the context of the existing literature, and suggestions were made to researchers and psychological counselors in line with the results.
