Abstract :The period 1968-1972 formed a pivot for American poetry, especially for the avant-garde. The turmoil in the society caused by the Vietnam War came to a climax. President Johnson declined to run for office for a second term, and in the aftermath of the war and more betrayals of the public trust, President Nixon was forced to leave the Presidency in 1974. The 1960s ended and the 1970s began with deep divisions in the society, the economy as well as in the province of poetry.
