Abstract :At the beginning of the 16th century, Spain, which dominated the sea routes with geographical discoveries, was the biggest rival of England and the Ottoman Empire in the sea. With England’s adoption of Protestantism, competition between the Catholic Spain increased. England, looking for an ally against Spain, found the solution in the Ottoman Empire. Although it was seen as the trade in the Mediterranean that started the relations between the two states, the strengthening of Spain behind the scenes could not be ignored. Queen Elizabeth I, sent William Harborne to Istanbul as the first English ambassador and officially started the relations between the two states. At the end of the 16th century, as a result of the correspondence between The Queen of England Elizabeth I and The Ottoman Emperor Sultan Murad III, the English were helped against Spain and the right of free trade in the Mediterranean was given by giving an ahidname.
