FOREST AND FORESTRY IN JAPAN

Abstract :Japan is located at the easthern edge of Euroasia, between longitudes of 123 and 149 degrees and latitudes of 26 and 46 degrees. Forests of Japan are spread out from sub-frigid zone to subtropical zone. Japan has approximately 23.85 million ha. of forests, which consist of 10.33 million ha manmade forests, and 13.52 million ha of natural forest area covering 43.32 % and 56.68 % of total forest area, respectively. Most of species of man-made forests are coniferous trees, such as Cryptomeria japonica, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Larix leptolepis, Pinus sp., so on, and they make up 98 % of total man-made forest area.
