SUMMARY The prosthetic prognosis of removable prostheses for patients with resections of the mandible is quite variable. In some patients only esthetics can be improved, whereas in other patients improved mastication is a reasonable objective. Edentulous patients with lateral discontinuity defects of the mandible have little hope of achieving presurgical levels of masticatory efficiency. Loss of continuity of the mandible destroys the balance and symmetry of mandibular function, leading to altered mandibular movemants and deviation of the residual fragment toward the surgical side. Mandibular based guidance restorations and palatally based guidance restorations are used to reduce mandibular deviation.
