Abstract :Objective: This study was conducted to examine the effect of the sleep program applied to elderly individuals living in nursing homes on cognitive status and sleep quality. Methods: The sample of the study, planned with a randomized controlled design, consisted of elderly individuals (n: 60) living in two nursing homes in Istanbul. Socio-Demographic Survey Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Standardized Mini Mental State Examination (SMMSE) and Sleep Program Tracking Form were used to collect data. Results: There was no significant difference between the length of stay in the nursing home, regular exercise, sleep patterns and night urination variables of the experimental and control groups, and the two groups had similar characteristics (P > .05). There was no significant difference between the PSQI (P =.450) and SMMSE (P =.090) pretest scores of the experimental group and the control group. After the program, the PSQI score of the experimental group was positively significantly lower (P <.001) and the SMMSE score was significantly higher (P = .010) than the control group. Conclusion: It was determined that the sleep program positively affected sleep quality and cognitive status. Research; Performing a post-program evaluation only once is limited by the variety of chronic diseases and patterns in elderly individuals and the inability to fully detect their effects on sleep quality. It is recommended that future studies be conducted with a larger sample group and longer follow-up.
