Abstract :The initial dismay and disappointment in Washington and a number of Arab capitals which greeted Likud`s victory in the recent Israeli elections has given way to a growing sense of doom and foreboding as tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbours have increased markedly and violence has erupted in the occupied territories and areas which are controlled by the Palestinian National Authority.
