Abstract :Since Streptomyces scabiei causing potato common scab disease was identified firstly in 1890 by Thaxter methods used for the diagnosis of Streptomyces species have evolved continuously. In the 1940s with the discovery of antibiotics produced by Streptomyces species, the number of Streptomyces species defined up to 40 has increased by upon 3000. However many of species identified in this period were synonyms. Morphological and physiological methods such as spore chain morphology, spore color, substrate mycelium and soluble pigments, melanin production and use of some carbon sources in use of identification of Streptomyces species including pathogenic species are put forward with this project. During this period, more than 200 Streptomyces species were re-defined and the type cultures of them were placed in international culture collections. Today, pathogenicity, fatty acid analysis and molecular methods such as PCR have been used for the identification of pathogenic Streptomyces species on potato such as S. scabiei, S. acidiscabies, S. turgidiscabies, S. europaeiscabiei, S. stelliscabiei, S. luridiscabiei, S. puniciscabiei and S. niveiscabiei as well as classic morphological and physiological methods.
