Abstract :Heat generated during welding induces an important temperature gradient in and around the welded area. In arc welding process, three main different zones were recorded in welded joint: fusion zone, heat affected zone. The objective of this paper is to present the thermal cycle simulation technique and its utility for the study of the heat affected zone. Rapid heating and cooling treatment were applied in specific simulation equipment. The most published research works about the use of the thermal cycle simulation for understanding the heat affected zone are presented. A case study is also presented. We have showed the importance of this technique for the investigation of the HAZ.
