Abstract :The Iraq Museum in Bagdad has tvvo fragments of an alabastcr stela discovered in the Hai district of Southern Iraq about 1953. The fragments were published by F. Basmachi1 vvho identified the subjcct matter, shape and style of the stela as appropriatc to the Akkadian period, possibly to the rcign of Naramsin. Good photographs of the principal scenes werc subsequcntly pubiished by M. Hirmcr and E. Strommenger. Mrs. Strommenger dates the fragments to her subdivision Reichsakkadisch II-III but declines to attribute the stela to a spccific ruler.2 The two preserved fragments each form part of two registers vvhich can bc aligncd in restoration insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(Plato XXVIII);. The upper register shows a row of nüde captives moving to the left. The vietims have their upper arms tied together behind their backs, and march with their hcads inserted in a laddcr-like implcment which forccs the prisoners to stay in strict file. This disciplinary vvoodcn instru- ment has been tentatively identified by E. Gordon as the ncck-stock insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(shigârum); of Akkadian texts.3
