Abstract :This paper presents the results of the study and the classification of historical dictionaries in general linguistics, Turkic and Kazakh linguistics. The author focuses attention on the difference between synchronous and diachronic dictionaries, on the classification of the diachronic dictionaries, as well as on the research of the structure of etymological, historical and dialectological dictionaries in Kazakh linguistics. Historical lexicography is considered within general lexicography as a separate direction where etymological, dialectological and historical lexicography find their theoretical justification. New genres of historical dictionaries compiled as a result of active development of lexicography have been defined. The review of historical dictionaries on turkology has been conducted, the link between etymological and historical lexicography has been pointed out. The sample of a dictionary entry of Historical Dictionary of the Modern Language has been attached. The principles of semantic description of the card-index fund of the modern Kazakh language and of the historical card-index fund are the object of the research.
