Abstract :ABSTRACT This study conducted in 2012-13 educational year, aimed at investigating the metaphors developed by the high school students` enrolling at high school in Canakkale province of Turkey and studies students` definition of “city”. Additionally, finding out the misconceptions on the “city” constitutes the other aim of the study. According to the research results, the students involved in the study used 75 different metaphors about “city”. Then these metaphors were divided into 12 different conceptual categories which were also categorized into as positive and negative perceptions of students towards the concept of “city”. ÖZET Bu araştırma, 2012-2013 eğitim yılında Çanakkale merkeze bağlı, 3 farklı ortaöğretim kurumundaki lise öğrencilerinin “şehir” kavramına ilişkin sahip oldukları metaforları belirlemek ve zihinlerindeki “şehir” tanımını ortaya koymak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Bununla birlikte öğrencilerin “şehir” kavramıyla ilgili kavram yanılgılarının ortaya çıkarılması çalışmanın diğer bir amacını oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre; öğrenciler “şehir” kavramına ilişkin toplam 75 adet geçerli metafor kullanmışlardır. Bu metaforlar ortak özelliklerine göre 12 farklı kavramsal kategoriye ayrılmıştır ve bu kavramsal kategoriler içerisinde şehir, çocukların zihninde ilk etapta 1. İyi / Olumlu, 2. Kötü / Olumsuz şeklinde iki gruba ayrılmaktadır.
