Abstract :Balkan sözcüğü Türkçe bir kelime olup, sarp ve ormanlık sıradağlar anlamındadır. Diğer bütün dillere de bu biçimde geçmiştir. Söz konusu bölgeye, Güney Doğu Avrupa dense de Balkan sözcüğünün kullanımı daha yaygındır. Osmanlı coğrafyacıları, Rumeli`yi batıdan doğuya doğru kesen dağ silsilleri/sıradağlar dolayısıyla bu bölgeye Balkan adını takarak Balkan Yarımadası/Şibh-i Ceziresider.
