Abstract :William R. Bascom is one of the representatives of the theory functional folklore. Functional folklore theory is one of the contextual theories and focuses specifically on the functions of elements folklore. According to the theorists of this theory, although folklore texts have an importance, what matters more than that is their function. In this study, the story of “Muhammad Beg Spivani” which is the story of the Hakkari region, was analyzed according to the four folklore functions identified by Bascom. The study consists of three main parts and an appendix. In the first chapter, functional folklore theory has been outlined. In this section, opinions of Malinowski and Bascom are emphasized. In the second part, a summary of the story of Muhammad Beg Spivani is given. In the third part, this theory is applied on the story of Muhammad Beg Spivani and the functions determined in the story are gathered under three main functions. The full text of the story of Muhammad Beg Spivani is given in the appendix.
