Abstract :This study examines the transformation of intra-family communication in the digital age through the concept of “digital silence.” It also investigates how this phenomenon is experienced at different stages of romantic relationships—namely, in the early years of marriage and after divorce. Digital silence refers to the lack of communication between individuals who share the same physical space but refrain from interacting due to the intense use of digital devices. The study explores how individuals perceive and emotionally interpret this silence, as well as the strategies they employ to cope with it. The research adopts a qualitative approach and utilises semi-structured in-depth interviews as the primary data collection method. The study sample consists of 32 participants living in İstanbul and surrounding areas who actively use digital technologies: 8 newly married couples and 8 divorced couples. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed thematically. The findings are expected to reveal that digital silence is not merely a technical issue, but a complex communicative phenomenon associated with emotional distancing, disconnection, and individual withdrawal. Among newly married individuals, this silence is often linked to personal habits or the need for individual space, whereas among divorced individuals, it is frequently perceived as a precursor or reflection of relational breakdown. By critically addressing the effects of digitalisation on family structures, this study aims to contribute to the literature in communication studies, family sociology, and media interaction.
