Family Representation in Local Media: The Case of Trabzon Local Newspapers

Abstract :The family structure, as the smallest unit forming society, has evolved throughout history in response to the political, social, economic, and cultural conditions of each era. In recent years, rapid technological developments have significantly influenced family dynamics and values. Consequently, various initiatives and regulations have been introduced in Türkiye to strengthen the family structure and enhance public awareness of family unity. In this context, 2025 was declared the “Year of the Family,” and the week of 15–21 May was designated as Family Week. This study examines how the Anatolian local press, particularly in Trabzon, covers family-related issues and family policies. Using the document analysis method, newspapers from Basın İlan Kurumu such as Günebakış, Taka, Karadeniz’de Son Nokta, and Kuzey Ekspres, published between 1–31 May 2025, were analysed through content analysis. Among approximately 11,500 news articles, family-themed content was identified and categorised under marriage, death, domestic violence, family life, family policies, the Year of the Family, Mother’s Day, and family-related accidents. The results revealed that family-themed coverage peaked during Mother’s Day week and often highlighted the family institution as a core social value. Positive themes such as love, respect, social solidarity, motherhood, and family values were prominently emphasised, while negative aspects like violence and divorce received relatively less attention.
