Abstract :This review essay provides a comparative analysis of Athina Karatzogianni’s contributions to the study of digital politics through two key monographs: Firebrand Waves of Digital Activism 1994–2014 (2015) and Fractal Leadership (2023, co-authored with Jacob Matthews). The first section examines Firebrand Waves, which maps twenty years of cyberconflict through four historical phases. It highlights Karatzogianni’s thesis of \\\"mainstreaming,\\\" arguing that as digital activism shifted from radical margins to routine politics, it lost its disruptive capacity and became increasingly vulnerable to state surveillance and corporate control. The second section analyzes Fractal Leadership, which deepens this critique by deconstructing the myths of \\\"horizontalism\\\" and \\\"leaderlessness\\\" in contemporary movements. The review details how the authors introduce the concept of \\\"fractal leadership,\\\" positing that authority has not disappeared but has mutated into unstable, recursive patterns driven by algorithmic temporality and viral affect. Furthermore, it explores how platform capitalism has transformed ideology from a discursive practice into a process of \\\"biolabour\\\" and commodified attention. The final section synthesizes these works, demonstrating that they represent a theoretical evolution from historical diagnosis to structural analysis rather than a rupture. The review concludes that Karatzogianni’s scholarship offers a cohesive, critical framework that exposes the limitations of digital publicness, arguing that the infrastructural logic of current digital networks often undermines the strategic coherence necessary for effective political emancipation.
