Abstract :Objective: To comment on the learning curve regarding unicompartmental knee replacement by evaluating the outcomes of 33 patients, who were operated by a single surgeon between 2007 and 2010. Study Design: Retrospective Patients: A total of 33 patients, including 28 females and 5 males were assessed. The patients were divided into 4 groups so as to reflect the years in order to enable a comparison of the outcomes by year. The study groups didn’t exhibit any statistical difference with respect to age or the pre-operative Knee Society knee scores. Method: The patient groups were statistically compared for data on age, pre- and post-operative Knee Society knee scores, patients’ self assessments, the alignment of the prosthesis, infection, the duration of operation and the extent of hemorrhage. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the study groups with respect to the presence of postoperative infection, the alignment of the prosthesis and the patients’ self assessments or the extent of hemorrhage. A statistically significant difference was observed in the duration of operation and the postoperative Knee Society knee scores over time; as the experience increased, the duration of operation was decreased and the knee scores improved. Implications: The results showed that a single surgeon could significantly shorten the duration of operation for knee replacement surgery and achieve clinically better outcomes within a 4 year period. These data demonstrate the presence of a learning curve in unicompartmental knee replacement surgery, which is spread over years.
