Abstract :Latex allergy, ranging from contact dermatitis to anaphylaxis, which carries fatal risks, is an important health problem, threatening both patients and medical personnel. A great number of medicinal products often used in emergency and perioperative practices contain latex. But this information is not always indicated in the list of contents of some of these products. Contact dermatitis cases, which may seem insignificant, may be caused by latex allergyand latex containing products are most often responsible for cases of anaphylaxy occuring during intraoperative periods. This case report presents two cases of contact dermatitis. The first patient was urgently taken into intensive care without a medical history regarding allergies taken. The second case was caused by latex containing products unknowingly used in the patient’s care. This patient did not report a latex allergy as this has not been specifically inquired about during medical history taking for perioperative periods. H1 and H2 antagonists and medical prophylaxis, such as steroids, are not effective to prevent latex allergy induced anaphylaxis. Latex allergy protection can only be ensured by preventing exposure. Thus, it is recommended that latex allergy be identified as much as possible prior to procedures and that efforts be made to avoid usage of latex containing products in high-risk patients during procedures
Keywords : latex allergy, contact dermatitis, nursing
