The Effect of Abdominal Massage on Constipation Management in Palliative Care Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract :Objective: To investigate how abdominal massage affects individuals receiving palliative care when it comes to managing constipation. Methods: This study is a single-centre, randomised control trial. There were 90 palliative patients in all when the trial was finished, including an intervention group of 45 and a control group of 45.The information form, Bristol Stool Scale, Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale and Constipation Assessment Scale were used. Data were analysed with SPSS25 software and evaluated with Chi-square test, Fisher\\\'s Exact test, McNemar test, Paired sample t test and Independent sample t test. Study methods and results reported in adherence to the CONSORT Statement. Results: The gastrointestinal symptom ratings of the patients in the intervention group were found to differ significantly before and after the intervention. The control group\\\'s results did not alter based on the number of days. The patients\\\' constipation evaluation ratings in the intervention group were shown to differ significantly from one another. There was no discernible variation in the control group\\\'s ratings. Conclusions: It has been demonstrated that palliative patients\\\' constipation may be effectively managed with abdominal massage. Therefore, abdominal massage may be recommended by nurses for patients with constipation risks and histories in the care provided in palliative clinics. It is also advised that patients and their families get education and care assistance that includes abdominal massage.
