Abstract :Türkçede kökeni izah edilemeyen kelimelerden biri de balta kelimesidir. Bu kelimeetimoloji sözlüklerinde ya izah edilmemekte ya da bir yabancı dilden alındığısöylenmektedir. Bu çalışmada balta kelimesinin Türkçe kökenli olma ihtimalindenyola çıkarak kelime Türkçede izah edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Sonuçta kelimenin “batırmak, saplamak” anlamına gelen bir bal- fiilinden türemiş olduğuna karar verilmiştir
