Abstract :Bir tarihçi için, çalışma alanının popüler hâle gelmesi iki ucu keskin bir bıçaktır: Yıllar süren araştırmalar somut şeyler ifade eder olmuştur; tarihçi, bir sosyal bilimci olarak, lâyık olduğu teveccühü görecek, siyasetçiler ve meraklı topluluklar tarafından el üstünde tutulacaktır; fakat aynı zamanda, genellikle güncel siyaseti ilgilendirdiği ölçüde popülerleşen çalışma alanı, bilgi kirliliğinin orta yerinde kurtarılmayı bekleyen bir biçareye dönecektir. Tanınırlık, kendisiyle doğru orantılı yanılgılar kümesini de beraberinde getirecek, tarihçinin işi de yine bununla doğru orantılı olarak zorlaşacaktır.
