Abstract :floor, projections and tiled roof In addition to timber framed buildings, strengthening the structural system of masonry buildings by using timber elements is very common in Traditional Turkish Houses, since the earthquake is one of the most important design criteria. The use of the horizontal timber joists (beams) which are embedded within the masonry load bearing walls give the building the ability of resist the horizontal forces that occur during the earthquakes. This beams called as “hatil” in traditional houses. With this idea, in addition to timber floor and roof constructions, it is aimed to look at the conservation issues of timber supporting elements in masonry structures, by examining some examples from Western Anatolia, and to emphasize the importance of them to make the building standing still. The study is produced from the field researches that have been carried out for the research project, which is titled as “Conservation Methods of Wooden Architectural Elements of the Traditional Turkish Houses” and supported by TUBİTAK
