Why Use Eurorack Synthesizers?: A Thematic Analysis of User Interviews

Abstract :In this article, we investigate the motivations of Eurorack synthesizer users, trying to understand why they choose expensive hardware over more capable software. We critique previous research for its limited data-gathering methods for answering such questions and instead conduct in-depth user interviews in Edinburgh and Glasgow to give voice to various users, employing the thematic analysis method as a way to approach our data analytically. The central finding of our study is that users view Eurorack as an instrument rather than a work-related tool (e.g., a computer). While this finding seems to agree with the previous literature, our other findings suggest that future research should also study the private and subjective experiences of the users in order to answer the question “Why Use Eurorack Synthesizers?”.
