Abstract :Microspheres are one of drug delivery system which allow therapeutic agents to penetrate into the body in order to increase their efficacy and safety by regulating their rate of release, timing and site of action in the body. Alginate is a natural polymer of polysaccharides which has the advantages of biocompatible, low toxicity, inexpensive, easy to obtain, capable of chemical modifications. Calcium chloride is the most suitable crosslinker for sodium alginate. Researchs on calcium-alginate microspheres has been widely developed for the delivery of various drugs. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive summary of research focusing on the in vitro (drug release, activity), stability and in vivo studies of calcium-alginate microspheres for drug delivery.
Keywords : microspheres, alginate, calcium chloride, in vitro, stability, in vivo
