Abstract :All measurements specify relations among magnitudes. Once these relations have been specified, other relations can be derived from them. But what kinds of relations can be derived depend on types of measurement. We have three types of measurements; ordinal scale, interval scale and ratio scale. All give us different relations about magnitudes. Ordinale scale is the weakest and ratio scale is the strongest. On the other hand, economic theory uses utility function in order to describe consumer preferences and utility is assumed to be ordinal scale. But Von Neumann and Morgenstem proved that utility can be measured by the interval scale.
