Abstract :This study investigates the effects of implementing the 5S methodology, a lean production technique, on occupational safety in lumber workshops, which are crucial elements of the woodworking industry. To this end, the occupational safety status of a lumber workshop operating in Osmaniye was determined using the 5x5 matrix risk assessment method. Subsequently, the 5S methodology was applied over 14 days, with the implementation stages detailed comprehensively in the study. Following the 5S implementation, changes in risk levels were reassessed using the 5x5 matrix risk assessment method, and the impact of this application on occupational safety was examined. The results of the study reveal that the 5S implementation has a positive effect on occupational safety, showing that before and following the 5S implementation, some significant hazards in the workplace were mitigated, risk levels decreased by 53%, and the level of occupational safety improved. The findings of this study suggest that the 5S methodology can be an effective tool for enhancing occupational safety in lumber workshops. Furthermore, the components of the 5S implementation, such as establishing order in the workplace, improving cleanliness standards, preventing time loss and material waste, and promoting continuous improvement, can contribute to enhanced occupational safety and reduced workplace accidents, as well as the creation of more efficient and better-organized working environments.
