Trust Communication in The Physician-Patient Relationship: An Evaluation From The Patients' Perspective

Abstract :This study aims to evaluate trust communication in the physician-patient relationship among individuals who have used health services in the past 12 months. The population of this descriptive cross-sectional study consists of literate individuals aged 18-65 years who reside in the central district of Ordu and have previously utilized healthcare services. The sample includes 400 individuals who voluntarily participated in the study. The data were collected in face-to-face interviews using the Descriptive Information Form and the Trust in Physician-Patient Communication Scale between August 15-September 15, 2024, through convenience sampling. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 software package. The level of trust in physician communication was found to be moderate (3.30). It was also determined that individuals aged 25 and under, those who are single, participants with a postgraduate education, and individuals who utilize healthcare services five times or less per year had higher mean scores for trust in physician communication. Trust in physician-patient communication did not show a statistically significant difference based on gender, income level, social security, presence of chronic disease, or prior utilization of healthcare services. This research enhances the literature by evaluating trust in physician-patient communication among literate individuals over the age of 18 who have utilized healthcare services in the past 12 months in Ordu, a relatively small province located in the northern part of Türkiye.
