Nursing Students' Views and Suggestions Regarding the Disability-Friendly Nursing Education Curriculum: A Mixed Method Research

Abstract :Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the views and suggestions of nursing students attending different universities in Türkiye regarding disability-friendly nursing education. Material and Methods: This convergent mixed methods design research was conducted between 1 May and 1 September 2020. The research sample consisted of 830 students studying in the nursing departments of 61 different universities. In order to collect the data for the study, the researchers created an online questionnaire asking nursing students questions about the disabled-friendly framework of the nursing education they received. The Chi-Square Test was used to compare the findings of students\' views and thoughts on nursing education with some variables. The answers to the open-ended questions were analysed by content analysis. Results: The study participants are women at the rate of 83.3%. It has been found that the state of having sufficient knowledge about nursing care for the health of persons with disabilities impacts the students\' thinking that their nursing education is disabled-friendly (p <.001). Conclusion: As a result of this research, most of the nursing students in Türkiye did not evaluate the education they received as disabled-friendly, and a large part of the students stated that they wanted to be educated on disability-related issues.
