Abstract :Jack Kerouac, Beat hareketinin öncülerinden biridir. Beat hareketi materyalizmi ve tüketici toplumu reddedip yeni değer yargıları benimsemiştir. Bu çalışmada Jack Kerouac’ın On the Road adlı eserinde çağdaş toplumun bu tatminsizliğini ele alınmaktadır. Romanın kahramanı Sal Paradise, Jack Kerouac’ın kendisidir. Sal Paradise bir yerde ancak birkaç ay kalır ve kaldığı sure içinde sonraki hedefe gidebilmek için çalışıp birkaç dolar kazanmayı amaçlar. Evindeyken seyahat özlemi, seyahat ederken de ev özlemi çeker. Hiçbir onu mutlu etmez. Sürekli bir tatminsizlik duygusu yaşar. Bu mutsuzluk, simgesel olarak, çağdaş toplumun mutsuzluğudur.
