Daylight Performance Analysis in Primary School Classrooms Based on Transparent Surface Ratio and Facade Orientation: A Case Study of Necmettin Öztürk Primary School

Abstract :In educational buildings, natural lighting is a critical design component in terms of both providing visual comfort and increasing energy efficiency, and it plays a direct role on students\\\' learning performance. In this study, natural lighting performance was evaluated in two different classrooms located in Necmettin Öztürk Primary School in the Ümraniye district of Istanbul. The effects of parameters such as transparent surface ratio, window positioning and façade orientation on daylight performance were analyzed by simulation method based on climate data. In the study, which was carried out in the Rhino-Grasshopper environment with the Honeybee plugin, Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA), Annual Solar Exposure (ASE) and Useful Daylight Illuminance (UDI) metrics were used. The findings show that the existing transparent surface ratios are insufficient to provide daylight at a homogeneous and sufficient level within the classroom; it is observed that significant improvements are provided in Classroom 1/A with the suggested openness arrangements. The study reveals that especially the density of construction around the building, façade orientation and interior surface features directly affect the natural lighting performance; In this regard, it emphasizes the importance of conducting natural lighting analyses at the early design stage, especially in newly constructed educational buildings.
