Abstract :Despite the emergence of school counseling in India over a decade ago, the profession is still considered to be in its infancy on the sub-continent. This paper discusses the history and policy of school-based counseling in India and how it has shaped the perspectives of the counseling profession. Education policies, the impact of capacity building in schools, and crisis issues in India are covered taking into consideration the many diversity issues in India. A future outlook for school counseling and the general counseling profession is also provided.
