Abstract :The Rotary Platform Abrasion Test has been recommended by the ASTM C 1353 standard to determine the abrasion resistance of natural stones used as flooring in areas exposed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. This test is carried out using a special testing device and a pair of abrasive wheels specified in the standard. On the other hand, in Europe and neighboring countries, including Türkiye, the Wide Wheel Abrasion Test and the Böhme Abrasion Test methods recommended in the EN 14157 standard are widely used. However, there is no clear information on how widely the Rotary Platform Abrasion Test is applied in these regions. Within the scope of this study, the Rotary Platform Abrasion Test was introduced and performed on ten groups of natural stones selected from Türkiye. Both the Rotary Platform and Wide Wheel abrasion tests were conducted under dry and saturated conditions, and the obtained abrasion values were compared and contributed to the literature. While the abrasion resistance obtained from the Rotary Platform decreased by up to 28.5% in saturated samples, the Wide Wheel abrasion values increased by up to 21.4%. The results showed that the abradability of natural stones increases significantly under saturated conditions.
