Abstract :The interaction between humans and the environment is of critical importance for sustainable living. Increasing consumption habits and environmental pollution have brought zero-waste policies to the forefront. This study aims to examine the attitudes of social studies teacher candidates toward zero-waste policies. The research seeks to evaluate the zero-waste attitudes of teacher candidates in terms of variables such as gender and whether they have taken courses like environmental education. The study was conducted using a survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The Zero-Waste Attitude Scale (Özcan & Meydan, 2024) was administered to 488 social studies teacher candidates from 28 universities across Turkey. Since the data did not follow a normal distribution, the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was used for data analysis. The research findings revealed that the zero-waste attitude levels of teacher candidates were generally high. The highest attitude scores were observed in items related to the unconscious consumption of natural resources. Female teacher candidates had significantly higher attitude scores than their male counterparts. Candidates who had taken environmental education courses exhibited more positive attitude scores compared to those who had not. The study demonstrates that social studies teacher candidates hold positive attitudes toward zero waste, with environmental education notably enhancing these attitudes. In this context, it is recommended to integrate environmental education into curricula and promote zero-waste projects.
