Investigation of Life Satisfaction and Life Quality of Families Having Gifted Children and Children with Special Needs

Abstract :The aim of this study is to compare the life satisfaction and life quality of parents having gifted children and children with special needs (mentally retarded) children and to examine the effects of different variables on their life satisfaction and quality. This study was carried out by using the relational survey model, which is one of the quantitative research methods. The purposive sampling method was employed and he sample of the study consists of 192 families having gifted children and 126 families having children with mentally retarded from the cities of different regions in Turkey; thus, a total of 318 families participated in the study. The Beach Family Quality of Life Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale were used as the data collection tools. Results of the study, it was determined that the level of family income influenced the life satisfaction of the parents having gifted children and that the level of family education influenced the quality of life. A low level and positive correlation was determined between life satisfaction and quality of life of the gifted children’ parents. A medium and positive correlation was found between life satisfaction and quality of life of the parents having children with special needs.
