Abstract :Aim: This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the global scientific literature on colonoscopy, with the objective of identifying publication trends, influential contributors, and emerging research directions. Materials and Methods: Data were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database, and analyses were performed using the Bibliometrix R package. Publications meeting predefined inclusion criteria (n = 7,516) were examined in terms of annual growth rates, citation impact, prolific authors, and leading journals. Results: The earliest colonoscopy-related article indexed in WoS was published in 1980. Between 1980 and 2025, a total of 7,516 articles appeared in 1,089 distinct sources, reflecting an average annual growth rate of 7.89% and a mean citation count of 30.33 per article. Publication output increased substantially after 2000, peaking in 2023 with 472 articles. The most influential researchers were Douglas K. Rex (United States), Cesare Hassan (Italy), and Evelien Dekker (Netherlands). The journals Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Journal of Gastroenterology, and Gastroenterology ranked as the top three publication venues. The most influential individual study was “Quality indicators for colonoscopy and the risk of interval cancer,” authored by Michal F. Kaminski and colleagues and published in 2010 in The New England Journal of Medicine. Conclusion: Colonoscopy-related publications have increased markedly over the past four decades, with a pronounced acceleration during the last twenty years. Advances in technology, adherence to quality benchmarks, and the integration of artificial intelligence are reshaping the research landscape, fostering multidisciplinary collaborations, and defining future directions in the field.
