The Relationship Between Compassion Levels and Caring Behaviors Among Nursing Students and Nurses in Surgical Clinics: A Comparative Study

Abstract :Introduction: Compassionate care in surgical patient management is a fundamental component in reducing complications and improving pain management. This study aims to address this significant gap by comparatively examining the levels of compassion and care behaviors among nurses working in surgical units and nursing students undergoing training in these units. Aim: This study was conducted to examine and compare the levels of compassion and care behaviors of nursing students and nurses practicing in surgical clinics. Method: It was a descriptive, relationship-seeking, comparative study. The sample consisted of nurses and nursing students who agreed to participate in the study between February and May 2023 (n = 194). The Participant Information Form, Compassion Scale and Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 were used to collect data. Results: It was found that age and having children had a statistically significant effect on the level of compassion (β = -0.04, p = 0.01; β = -0.45, p < 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, age, educational status, and willingness to work in the unit were identified as statistically significant predictors of care behaviors (β = 0.04, p < 0.001; β = 0.37, p = 0.01; β = -1.42, p < 0.001, respectively). It was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of total compassion and caring bahaviors (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In the study, there was no relationship between compassion and care perceptions of student nurses, and the level of compassion of nurses affected their care behaviours.
