Abstract :This study employs an interdisciplinary qualitative approach, integrating literary analysis with sociological and social psychological perspectives to examine in-group and out-group dynamics in Canan Tan’s novel Hasret [Longing] (2013). The novel focuses on the Turkish–Greek Population Exchange (1922–1924), a pivotal event in modern Turkish history, and serves as a lens to analyze intergroup relations between the Muslim Turkish and Christian Greek communities. The study employs content analysis and the Bogardus Social Distance Scale to assess varying degrees of intimacy and social distance, thereby elucidating the manner in which prejudice influences both interpersonal interactions and collective relationships. Moreover, it demonstrates how Tan strategically weaves historical prejudice into narrative construction, showing its concrete impact on character development and plot progression. The findings underscore the unique capacity of literature to simultaneously reflect and critically engage with socio-political tensions through fictional representation. This underscores the value of popular fiction as a subject for serious academic study.
