Abstract :PERFORMING FACTS: DOCUMENTARY THEATRE Abstract Documentary theatre is a movement that brings social issues to the stage by using factual information. This article will explore how documentary theatre evolved from the 1920`s to the present by focusing on three major periods: The first period began after World War I in Germany. The father of documentary theatre, Erwin Piscator concentrated on issues of class tension and power structures. The second period began in Germany during the 60`s. German playwrights came to terms with Germany`s Nazi past with plays such as Weiss` Investigation. After 9/11 there has been a great increase in verbatim/documentary theatre which marked a new period. The aim of this article is to evaluate the differences between these three periods. Keywords: Political theatre, documentary theatre, Piscator, Weiss. Öz Belgesel tiyatroda, yaşanmış önemli olayları belgelerden yola çıkarak sahnelenir. Bu makalede belgesel tiyatronun 1920`lerden günümüze nasıl değiştiği, üç farklı döneme değinerek incelenecektir. İlk dönem I. Dünya Savaşı sonrası Almanya`da başlar. Belgesel tiyatronun kurucusu Erwin Piscator belgesel tiyatroyu işçi sınıfının mücadelesinde kullanmıştır. İkinci dönem 1960`larda bir kez daha Almanya`da gündeme gelir. Bu dönem yazılan belgesel oyunlar özellikle Hitler dönemiyle hesaplaşmanın bir parçası olmuştur. 11 Eylül sonrası ise güncel meseleleri konu alan ve “verbatim” olarak adlandırılan belgesel oyunlarda ciddi bir artış yaşanmıştır. Bu makalenin amacı, her üç dönemi kendi içinde değerlendirip belgesel tiyatronun nasıl değişim gösterdiğini saptamaktır.
